Brian Logue
My laboratory develops innovative bioanalytical methods for toxic agents — their metabolites and therapeutics — and is the premier laboratory for the analysis of all things cyanide. Notably, we also invented Ice Concentration Linked with Extractive Stirrer (ICECLES) for ultratrace detection of toxic compounds and a rapid diagnostic sensor for cyanide in blood. We recently discovered a therapeutic to treat the horrific injuries caused by sulfur mustard. This drug may become the first to effectively treat sulfur mustard exposure over 200 years after its discovery!
Derek Brandis
My research focus uses analytical and environmental chemistry to bring together environmental science and STEM outreach. Current research in my group involves the investigation and reconstruction of the past atmospheric environment by measuring different chemical species found in polar ice cores. Additionally, my lab examines environmental contaminants in other types of media such as drinking water and surface waters and looks to develop and/or improve analytical methods and techniques. I also strive to use my background in environmental chemistry to support and engage Native American students and communities in STEM throughout South Dakota and the surrounding region.
M. Nurul Islam
My research is multidisciplinary and focuses on metabolic investigation of infectious and inflammatory diseases applying metabolomics and lipidomics approaches. The long-term goal of my research is to discover biomarkers for diagnosis, reveal disease progression and evaluate response to therapeutic intervention using sophisticated mass spectrometric techniques for characterization and profiling of metabolites, lipids, sugars, drugs and toxicants from varied biological samples, including serum, urine, saliva, tissue, bacteria and plants.
