Matheus Costa was born and raised in Brazil, where his interest in agriculture developed at an early age through the influence of his father, an agronomist who has spent his career working in the agricultural industry. After earning his B.S. in agronomy, Costa gained professional experience in the Brazilian agricultural industry working with corn, soybean and coffee production, and he later broadened his academic experience through an exchange program and research at the University of Minnesota.

Costa is currently pursuing an M.S. in plant science at South Dakota State University under the supervision of Jason Clark. His research focuses on soil fertility and nutrient management, with particular emphasis on nitrogen management, cropping systems, nutrient use efficiency and soil health.

His broader research interests center on developing practical and sustainable nutrient management strategies for cropping systems. He is particularly interested in applied research that bridges field experimentation with practical recommendations for farmers and agricultural professionals.
