Award-winning financial journalist and bestselling author Andrew Ross Sorkin will anchor the upcoming 2026 South Dakota Land and Lending Conference. South Dakota State University’s Ness School of Management and Economics is presenting the annual conference Oct. 15 at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center in Sioux Falls.

Decades of research undertaken by South Dakota State University Distinguished Professor Kasiviswanathan “Muthu” Muthukumarappan earned him lifetime achievement awards from two professional organizations this summer. Muthu was honored by the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) as a fellow at its meeting in Chicago July 11, and on July 14 he was in Indianapolis to be honored by the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers at its international meeting.

As the nation marks 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, South Dakota State University’s School of American and Global Studies will host a two-day public event built around a single printed sheet that shows the United States was a multilingual, globally interconnected country from its first days.

David Reynolds, director of South Dakota State University’s School of Performing Arts, will present “Brass in America,” a free public recital at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13. The concert will take place in Founders Recital Hall at the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center.

The South Dakota State University School of Design is hosting artist Elizabeth Morisette as the Stuart Artist-in-Residence Sept. 8-Oct. 2.

Drones are increasingly being used for bridge inspections and to create 3D digital twins of the structures, but guidelines to replace in-person measurements of bridge geometry needed for structural assessment are still a work in progress. That’s where research by Akram Jawdhari and Ahmad Faqiri comes in. They are part of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at South Dakota State University. Jawdhari is an assistant professor in his fourth year at SDSU. Faqiri is a doctoral student who arrived in January after completing his second master’s degree at the University of Utah. They have taken thousands of images of four concrete bridges in Brookings County and are working on data analysis. The goal is to have turned their research into a paper to submit to a peer-reviewed journal by the end of December.

Maegan Questad has learned that teaching can take many forms. Sometimes it means explaining a difficult math concept to a classmate. Other times, it means standing in front of The Pride of the Dakotas Marching Band, conducting a rehearsal and helping hundreds of musicians move as one. For Questad, a senior mathematics major with a teaching specialization, those experiences have become part of the same journey to become an educator.
