Interprofessional Education in Pharm.D.
The World Health Organization defines interprofessional education as educational activities where health professions students from various disciplines learn about, from and with each other.
As a Pharm.D. student at SDSU, you have the opportunity to learn with students from medicine, nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, social work, respiratory care, public health, medical laboratory science and more.
There are interprofessional learning experiences in each year of the professional program. These activities include interprofessional simulations in both the inpatient and outpatient setting as well as interprofessional collaboration in a variety of patient care settings through experiential education.
Students start participating in interprofessional education in their first semester of the Pharm.D. program. In the first year, you will learn about interprofessional communication and roles and responsibilities of other healthcare professionals through a diabetes simulation with nursing students and a poverty simulation with health professions students at SDSU.
In the second year of the Pharm.D. program, you will continue building your interprofessional education knowledge by studying team dynamics, conflict resolution, and values and ethics of interprofessional practice. Students participate in two high-fidelity simulations with nursing students. You will also explore social determinants of health with medical students from the University of South Dakota.
In the P3 year, you have an opportunity to apply your clinical knowledge and skills in three interprofessional simulations. Two simulations are conducted on the campus of the University of South Dakota with a variety of health professions including medicine, nursing, social work, physical therapy and occupational therapy. In addition, you will complete an on-call simulation with Doctor of Nursing Practice students.
You will have the opportunity to interact with healthcare professionals from all disciplines during your introductory and advanced pharmacy practice experiences. There are also focused interprofessional education simulations during the final year of the program, including code simulations and bedside rounding simulations.
