Interior Design Computer Specifications
To support current and future software requirements within the interior design program, students should purchase a laptop that meets or exceeds the following specifications.
Required Baseline for All Incoming Students
- Windows 11
- Intel Core i7 processor (AMD equivalent performance level)
- NVIDIA RTX 4060 graphics card or better
- 32 GB RAM
- 1 TB SSD storage
Preferred Specification (Recommended for a Full 4-Year Degree)
Students planning to use the same laptop throughout the interior design program are strongly encouraged to consider the following configuration:
- Intel Core i9 processor (or AMD equivalent performance level)
- NVIDIA RTX 4070 graphics card or better
- 64 GB RAM
- 1 TB-2 TB SSD storage
Processor Guidance
When evaluating laptop processors, performance depends on both processor speed and the number of central processing unit cores available. Students considering AMD processors should select a model with performance comparable to the Intel specifications listed above. If questions arise regarding processor selection, students are encouraged to consult SDSU Information Technology Services before purchasing a laptop.
Software and Performance Considerations
These recommendations are intended to support software used throughout the interior design curriculum, including:
- Autodesk Revit
- SketchUp
- Enscape
- Twinmotion
- Lumion
- Adobe Creative Cloud applications
While lower-specification laptops may run some software adequately, applications such as Revit, Enscape and rendering and visualization tools perform significantly better with dedicated NVIDIA RTX graphics cards, higher memory capacity and modern multicore processors.
Apple (Mac) Devices
Windows laptops are strongly preferred, macOS systems are not recommended due to software compatibility limitations and the Windows-based requirements of Autodesk Revit and certain rendering applications. Students who choose a Mac may encounter software restrictions, require virtualization or remote-access solutions, or be unable to run some course-required applications as efficiently as on a Windows-based system.
Students who purchase a Mac are responsible for ensuring their device can meet all course software requirements. The interior design program cannot guarantee compatibility or technical support for software that is not natively supported on macOS.
