Borrow Library Materials
Check out materials, equipment, study rooms and more using your SDSU employee ID card. Faculty and staff may borrow circulating collection materials for one year with a due date of Oct. 1. Bound periodicals are checked out for one week. See our guide for information about short-term checkout for items your students will need for course assignments.

Authorize others to use your SDSU ID card to checkout materials for you using this .
Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery
If the library does not have access to the books, scanned articles and other materials you need, they can be obtained from other libraries through Interlibrary Loan.
Our document delivery service provides scans of articles and chapters available in print in the library.
Submit requests from library databases or via the Interlibrary Loan link on our homepage. Contact Interlibrary Loan at 605-688-5573 or email us for additional information.
Instruction
The library offers instruction tailored to the needs of your course and students. Whether you're teaching an introductory course or an advanced seminar, your subject librarian can work with you to help students develop the research and information literacy skills they need to succeed.
For introductory courses, such as Composition I (ENGL 101), Foundations of Communication (CMST 101), and First-Year Seminars, librarians provide foundational instruction on topics such as finding and evaluating information, using library resources, developing search strategies and understanding the research process.
For upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses, instruction is customized to your assignments and learning objectives. Sessions may focus on discipline-specific databases, advanced search techniques, literature reviews, evidence-based research, citation management, scholarly communication or other research skills relevant to your course.
Instruction can be delivered in person or online. The library also has two instructional classrooms, rooms 125 and 130, where librarians can host hands-on research and library instruction. Librarians are also available to provide one-on-one research consultations for students who need additional support.

Library Classrooms
Rooms 125 and 130 are available for faculty to reserve when not in use by librarians. These rooms may be reserved for one-time use up to four weeks ahead of need. See the for details. Contact your subject librarian to reserve a classroom.
Off-Campus Access
To access library resources from off campus, start from the library's website and click on the link to the database or resource you need. When prompted, enter your SDSU network credentials (the same login that you use for your university email or InsideState).
Students taking online courses, as well as faculty and staff not located on the Brookings campus, should use the library's Interlibrary Loan system to request articles and books. The library will deliver items to you electronically or via USPS.

Research and Publishing
Read and Publish Agreements
are available from several publishers. These agreements allow SDSU faculty to publish without paying traditional publication fees.
Research Impact
As you create your faculty annual review, use the library's to find resources on altmetrics, journal impact factor and other measures of value for publications.
The Division of Research and Economic Development has resources related to finding and applying for grants. Librarians can help with preliminary research as you prepare to apply for grants.

Open PRAIRIE
is the SDSU institutional repository. It supports the collection, preservation and dissemination of SDSU’s scholarly and creative output from faculty, staff and students. Open PRAIRIE allows for permanent storage of and public access to institutional materials. For more information, contact Michael Biondo, electronic resources and scholarly communications librarian.
Archives and Special Collections
The South Dakota State University Archives and Special Collections contains the university archives and material related to South Dakota history and life.
Textbooks and Open Educational Resources
E-textbooks
When possible, the library will purchase e-textbooks from participating publishers, saving students money. Contact your subject librarian for more information or to check if an e-textbook is available for your course.
Reserves
Make required or supplemental items available for students to use on a short-term basis or link to online library resources in your D2L course.
Open Educational Resources
are teaching, learning and research resources that reside in the public domain or have been released under an intellectual property license that permits free use and repurposing by others. Some benefits of these resources include increased retention, cost savings to students, and opportunities for creativity, collaboration and innovative teaching.
